SeaScapes Beach Rangers

Beach Rangers are a group of young people aged 14-18 who want to discover and explore our coastal wildlife and seascape.

If you’re aged 14-18, join us this month to creatively explore our local beaches and rocky shores, using your ears as well as your eyes!

We will show you how to use sound recording equipment to capture the human and non-human sounds of Roker beach, and make your own field recordings. We will then go to the University of Sunderland, and participate in a Sound Collage workshop with Artist in Residence Louise Mackenzie and Composer Hayley Jenkins, to learn about Acoustic Ecology, Deep Listening and Sound Collage. We will use some simple editing techniques for working with field recordings, and we will make our own ‘instructions for listening’ using collage, that will become part of a printed Risograph publication for the SeaScapes project.

After our workshop we will head back to Roker Pier for collection at 3pm.

Places are limited, so booking is essential.

The Beach Rangers are Durham Wildlife Trust’s young volunteers, aged 14-18, who usually meet on the fourth Saturday each month. Activities include rocky shore surveys, beach cleans, seabird walks, practical conservation tasks, wildlife photography, marine mammal surveys, underwater filming and more. We will also investigate how the coastline has changed with industry and development, and how people and wildlife can coexist sharing the coastal environment. The sessions are inclusive to all and encourage team working and problem solving. Perfect if you love nature or being outdoors and a great way to achieve your Duke of Edinburgh or John Muir Awards.

This event is part of the SeaScapes ‘Intertidal Interactive’ Project.
