The main locations and their benefits of the project are listed below:

Hartlepool

The Highlight restored in Hartlepool Marina.

The Heugh Battery received a sound box and recording of World War 1 stories and a window film to illustrate where wrecks are located off the Headland.

The Little Terns nesting on Seaton Carew beach received protection to breed successfully. Colony size and fledgling count has increased. Wardens and LT volunteers have  engaged with members of the public and talked to schools visiting the coast about the Little Tern colony resulting in greater support and ‘love’ for the Little Terns.

People will ‘ conserve only what they love, love only what they understand, understand only what they have been taught’ (Baba Dioum, 1968)

Tern the Tide coastal group established.

The historic buildings in Seaton Carew were catalogued and The Green at Seaton Carew was geo-surveyed.

Interpretation signs were located at Seaton Carew, Hartlepool Marina and Crimdon.

Schools events at the Royal Navy Museum.

Event in the Park – schools event as lead up to Tall Ships Race, in 2023.

Numerous beach cleans at beaches from Seaton Carew to Crimdon.

Rocky Shores and Seawatch surveys on Headlands.

Brus to Headland cycle way and Coast to Clavering walkway created.

Link to local group established- Let’s Connect, focusing on health and wellbeing, encouraging local people to connect with wildlife and their local area.

Crimdon

Large bench seat restored and mosaics created created by local pupils and youth group.

Blackhall

Horden

Easington

Interpretation signage.

White Leas – plant propagation for coastal grassland restoration.

Seaham

The Red Acre steps were rebuilt, interpretation signage was located at Red Acre and the Durham Heritage Centre both at the Seaham Marina.

Numerous beach cleans on the various Seaham beaches.

Seaham and Blast Beach at Nose’s Point self-guided geology walk as part of ReadingtheRocks.com.

Supported Seaham Youth Festival at various events.

Beach litter /art festival with EDAN.

Eco Fayre at Dalton Park.

Supported Northumbrian Water Bluespaces project Hazel Dene (habitat and access improvements).

Rocky Shores surveys and Seawatch surveys at Red Acre and Seaham Hall cliffs.

Whitburn

The Whitburn Community Conservation Centre at NT Souter, this new eco-design building contains toilets, touch screen television with Coastal app and additional drone footage as well as room for bird ringing and meeting room.

Volunteers all along the coast

Volunteer Beach Clean Leaders have been trained to deliver beach cleans on behalf of SeaScapes and often deputise for the Beach Care Officer.

We have also collected litter data for the Marine Conservation Society for 3 years as part of the Great British Beach Clean, this data is fed into a national database to build up a picture of the state of the UK’s beaches.
